Top 10 Destinations for Winter Sun from London

Top 10 Destinations for Winter Sun from London

There's a particular kind of misery that sets in around November in London. The commute is dark both ways. The heating bill arrives. And somewhere, buried in your camera roll, is a photo from last summer that makes you wonder why you ever came back.

The good news: you don't have to wait until next July. These ten destinations are all reachable from London with direct or single-stop flights, and every one of them offers reliable sunshine, warm seas, and the kind of reset that a British winter makes feel absolutely essential.

1. The Maldives

There is nowhere quite like the Maldives in winter. The dry season runs from November through April, which means you're almost guaranteed clear skies, flat seas, and water temperatures hovering around 28°C. Overwater villas, house reefs teeming with marine life, and sunsets that look almost too good to be real — the Maldives delivers on every promise it makes.

Flights from London Heathrow to Malé take around 10–11 hours, with excellent connections on British Airways, Emirates, and Qatar Airways. It's worth speaking to a travel expert about routing: a connection through Dubai or Doha can often unlock significantly better fares than flying direct.

Best for: Honeymoons, milestone birthdays, and anyone who has spent too long staring at a grey sky.

2. Barbados

The Caribbean's most refined island, Barbados combines proper white-sand beaches with a sophisticated food and drink scene that punches well above its weight. The west coast — the so-called Platinum Coast — is sheltered, calm, and lined with some of the best beach bars in the world. The east coast is wilder, more dramatic, and beloved by surfers.

British Airways flies direct from Gatwick in around 8.5 hours, making Barbados one of the most accessible long-haul winter sun destinations from London. The island is also one of the few Caribbean destinations where you genuinely don't need a hire car — the route taxis are cheap, frequent, and part of the experience.

Best for: Couples, foodies, and anyone who wants the Caribbean without the all-inclusive formula.

3. Tenerife

Tenerife is the year-round option that Londoners consistently underestimate. The south of the island — around Playa de las Américas and Los Cristianos — sees over 300 days of sunshine a year, with winter temperatures reliably in the low-to-mid 20s. It's a short flight (around 4.5 hours from most London airports), there are dozens of daily departures, and the range of accommodation runs from budget apartments to genuinely excellent five-star resorts.

The north of the island is a different world entirely: lush, green, and home to the extraordinary Teide National Park, where you can walk through ancient lava fields and look down on the clouds below you.

Best for: Families, last-minute escapes, and anyone who wants guaranteed sun without a long-haul flight.

4. Dubai

October through March is Dubai's golden season. The humidity drops, the temperature settles into a perfect 24–28°C, and the city comes alive with outdoor events, beach clubs, and the kind of spectacle that only Dubai can deliver. The beaches are genuinely excellent — Jumeirah Beach is one of the best urban beaches in the world — and the desert is just 45 minutes from the city centre.

Emirates, British Airways, and Virgin Atlantic all fly direct from London in around 7 hours, and the competition keeps fares competitive. Dubai also works brilliantly as a stopover on the way to the Maldives, Bali, or Australia.

Best for: City breaks with beach, shoppers, and families who want a mix of culture and sun.

5. Zanzibar

Tanzania's spice island is one of East Africa's best-kept secrets — though it's becoming less secret every year. The beaches on the north and east coasts are extraordinary: powder-white sand, turquoise water, and the kind of quiet that's increasingly hard to find in more established destinations. The dry season runs from June to October and again from December to March, making it an excellent winter choice.

Most flights from London route through Nairobi, Addis Ababa, or Dar es Salaam, with total journey times of around 12–14 hours. Combining Zanzibar with a Tanzania safari is one of the great travel experiences — and something a good travel agent can put together far more efficiently than you'd manage alone.

Best for: Adventurous travellers, safari combinations, and anyone who wants to feel genuinely off the beaten track.

6. Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka's west and south coasts — including the famous beaches at Mirissa, Unawatuna, and Tangalle — are at their best from November through April, when the southwest monsoon has passed and the sea is calm and clear. It's a destination that rewards slow travel: the food is extraordinary, the wildlife is remarkable (blue whales off Mirissa, leopards in Yala), and the cultural sites — Sigiriya, Kandy, the ancient cities of the Cultural Triangle — are genuinely world-class.

SriLankan Airlines flies direct from Heathrow in around 10.5 hours. British Airways and Emirates also offer good connections via their hubs.

Best for: Culture lovers, foodies, and travellers who want more than a beach.

7. Lanzarote

The most dramatic of the Canary Islands, Lanzarote is a place of extraordinary volcanic landscapes, brilliant white villages, and some of the best windsurfing and kitesurfing in the world. Like Tenerife, it offers reliable winter sunshine and short flight times from London — around 4 hours — but it has a character that's distinctly its own. The César Manrique Foundation, the Jameos del Agua, and the Timanfaya National Park are unlike anything else in Europe.

Best for: Active travellers, couples, and anyone who wants winter sun with genuine cultural depth.

8. Thailand (Koh Samui & Phuket)

Thailand's Gulf Coast — including Koh Samui and the surrounding islands — is at its best from December through April, when the northeast monsoon brings dry, sunny weather to the east side of the peninsula. Phuket and the Andaman Coast are best visited from November to April. Either way, you're looking at warm seas, excellent food, and some of the most beautiful island scenery in the world.

Bangkok is around 11 hours from London, with Thai Airways, British Airways, and Emirates all offering good connections. Island-hopping by ferry or domestic flight is easy and inexpensive once you're there.

Best for: First-time long-haul travellers, island hoppers, and anyone who wants extraordinary value for money.

9. Cape Verde

The Cape Verde archipelago sits in the Atlantic, 570 kilometres off the coast of West Africa, and offers something genuinely unusual: reliable trade winds, consistent sunshine, and a laid-back Creole culture that feels nothing like the more polished Caribbean resorts. Sal and Boa Vista are the most popular islands for beach holidays, with long stretches of sand and calm, warm water. Santiago, the largest island, is more rugged and culturally rich.

TUI, easyJet, and Jet2 all fly direct from various UK airports in around 5.5–6 hours, making Cape Verde one of the most accessible winter sun destinations from London. It's also significantly less expensive than the Caribbean or Maldives.

Best for: Windsurfers, budget-conscious travellers, and anyone who wants something a little different.

10. Mauritius

Mauritius in winter is close to perfection. The island sits in the Indian Ocean, east of Madagascar, and its winter — which coincides with the British winter — is its dry season: clear skies, low humidity, and sea temperatures around 24°C. The beaches on the west and north coasts are sheltered and calm; the east coast is more exposed and dramatic. The food scene, which blends Indian, Chinese, Creole, and French influences, is one of the best in the Indian Ocean.

Air Mauritius and British Airways both fly direct from Heathrow in around 12 hours. It's a longer journey than the Canaries, but the quality of the destination more than justifies it.

Best for: Honeymoons, luxury travellers, and anyone who wants the Indian Ocean without the Maldives price tag.
